Are You Renovating Your Kitchen or Planning to Do So? Here Are Ideas for a Kitchen with Character.

The kitchen, the heart of family life, is a long-term investment. Whether you prefer stainless steel for an industrial vibe, Shaker style for a traditional ambiance, or natural wood for a Mid-Century touch, here are some of my favorite ideas to make your kitchen unique and timeless.

SHAKER STYLE

Shaker style, originating in the late 18th century, remains popular in Anglo-Saxon countries. Known for simple, handcrafted forms, it contrasts with the ornate Rococo period and is often considered a precursor to minimalism. Shaker elements are most commonly found in cabinet doors, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. These feature straightforward designs with understated handles and framed contours for a clean, timeless look.

At Maison Sloane, we admire the craftsmanship of French artisans Modern & Traditional Home, who create bespoke Shaker-inspired kitchens and storage solutions. For a unique Shaker kitchen, experiment with bold colors, as exemplified by British kitchen maker DeVOL.

MINIMALIST STYLE

If your style is minimalist and modern, and you’re hesitant to paint your cabinets mustard yellow or earthy red, opt for natural wood tones. For contemporary homes with cubic architecture, consider plywood. Light birch provides a Scandinavian touch, while orange-toned varnishes evoke Mid-Century California vibes. For a more traditional or rustic look, raw oak or pine cabinets add a cozy charm.

VINTAGE STYLE

For a unique, character-filled kitchen, mix and match vintage furniture. Draw inspiration from design experts like the English studio Retrouvius to give new life to old wooden pieces. Imagine making breakfast on an island that once belonged to a pharmacy or a ship.

ECO FRIENDLY AND BUDGET CONSCIOUS CHOICES

For eco-friendly countertops, opt for recycled plastic. Le Pavé transforms plastic waste into sustainable materials, offering customizable countertops and backsplashes in various colors. Their surfaces are easy to maintain, resistant to chemicals and heat (up to 120°C), and non-porous—proven in many of our clients' kitchens.

If you’re looking to update an existing kitchen, consider simple tweaks to refresh the aesthetic without replacing everything. Companies like Bocklip, Reform et Superfront ffer kitchen cabinet doors compatible with IKEA frameworks, available in a wide range of materials and colors.

For smaller budgets, eco-conscious upgrades, or rental spaces, replace cabinet handles with standout designs, like brass star-plated knobs from Matilda Goad. Adhesive films from Luminis Films can transform cabinet colors, and stick-on faux tiles like the Zellige from Smart Tiles can rejuvenate backsplashes—small details that make a big difference.

INOX KITCHENS

Our favorite material at Maison Sloane is stainless steel. Evoking the loft aesthetics of the '80s and '90s, stainless steel is experiencing a resurgence. Shock-resistant, corrosion-proof, and heat-resistant up to 500°C, it’s a staple in professional kitchens due to its durability and practicality.

For domestic spaces, stainless steel reflects light and lends a contemporary touch. Combine metallic elements with warmer, natural materials for an intriguing contrast.
